Skin Pen Treatment Aftercare: What to Do in the First Week (and where LED skin therapy fits)
By Vital Health and Aesthetics | July 16, 2026
We see the best results when you protect your skin like it matters, because it does. One of our patients told us, “I had very good results! Will definitely return, ” after microneedling with PRP, and aftercare was a big part of that win. Here in Lansdowne, VA, our #1 rule for the first 48 hours after Skin Pen Treatment is simple: keep it gently clean and hydrated, and avoid anything that heats, irritates, or contaminates your skin (makeup, sweat, pools, and sun).

Quick heads-up: Skin Pen microneedling creates thousands of controlled micro-injuries to trigger your body’s healing response and support collagen and elastin. That’s why your “simple” first-week choices can make or break the glow.
0–48 hours after Skin Pen: keep it clean, calm, and cool
Right after Skin Pen Treatment, your skin is doing active repair work. Redness and a warm, tight feeling are common. Our goal is to support healing and avoid introducing bacteria or extra inflammation. We generally recommend washing with a gentle cleanser twice daily using lukewarm water, then patting dry with a clean towel. No scrubbing. No washcloths. Clean hands only.
The first two days, keep it basic
- Hydrate: apply a pea-size amount of the recommended healing serum or ointment with clean hands.
- Skip makeup: hold off for 24–48 hours, or longer if your skin isn’t fully re-epithelialized (still raw or weepy).
- Avoid sweating: no gym, hot yoga, or long outdoor heat for 48–72 hours.
- Stay out of the sun: no direct sun exposure. Sun plus fresh microneedling is a recipe for irritation and uneven pigment.
If you’re a commuter or a parent juggling school pickup, this is the window to plan around. In Lansdowne’s hot, humid summers, we love early-morning appointments so you’re not stepping into afternoon heat with freshly treated skin. And if you’re visiting near Lansdowne Village or the Lansdowne Resort for the weekend, ask us about quick follow-up check-ins so you’re not guessing at home.
One more big one: no active ingredients right now. That means retinol, acids (glycolic, salicylic, lactic), and even vitamin C for the next 7–14 days. Your skin will tell you when it’s ready, but rushing it tends to backfire.
Days 3–7: the “looks better, don’t get brave” week
By day 3, many people feel like they’re in the clear. Redness is often fading, and you might notice a rough, sandpapery texture or light flaking. That’s normal healing. This is also the week where picking, over-cleansing, and “just one exfoliating step” can set you back.
Keep doing
- Gentle cleanse twice daily.
- Healing serum or ointment in a thin layer. More is not better.
- Sleep on a clean pillowcase and avoid touching your face throughout the day.
Still avoid
- Pools, hot tubs, ocean: wait 7–14 days. Chlorine and bacteria are not your friend here.
- Direct sun: minimum 2 weeks. If you’re outdoors, use hats and shade and keep exposure brief.
- Heat exposure: long hot showers, saunas, and heavy sweating tend to prolong redness for a lot of people.
Real-life planning tip: If you’ve got weekend sports, hikes, or outdoor events around southern Leesburg, schedule your Skin Pen session with that 2-week sun buffer in mind. You’ll protect your result and stress less.
The products that protect your results (and where LED skin therapy helps)
Think of your first-week routine as “support healing, don’t challenge it.” Stick with a gentle cleanser, a simple healing serum or ointment we recommend, and then sunscreen once your skin has re-epithelialized. Apply everything with clean hands, using a pea-size amount, and let your skin breathe between layers.
Physical SPF only, once healed: We generally recommend a mineral sunscreen after the skin surface has healed, because it’s often less irritating than chemical filters right after microneedling.
LED skin therapy: LED is a nice add-on in many skin care plans because it supports a calmer-looking complexion. Timing matters though, so we’ll tell you when it makes sense for your skin after Skin Pen.
If you’re also comparing options like the “best skin laser treatment, ” keep in mind lasers and microneedling have different downtime and aftercare rules. We’ll walk you through what fits your texture goals, pores, and fine lines without stacking too much irritation at once.
